David McMillan shortlisted for the Graduate CIOB Award 2026

We’re delighted to share the news that David McMillan, Graduate Building Surveyor, has been shortlisted for the CIOB Scotland Graduate of the Year Award 2026.

David was nominated by the business in recognition of his academic achievement, professional development and commitment to the future of the surveying profession. The judges noted that this year’s competition was “tougher than ever”, making David’s shortlisting a fantastic achievement.

David’s journey into surveying began at an early age. Having gained practical construction experience from 14 while working alongside his father, he developed a strong interest in the built environment. At just 15, he received an unconditional offer to study Building Surveying at Glasgow Caledonian University, beginning his degree at 16.

Alongside his studies, David continued to gain practical experience and, at 16, first approached Allied Surveyors Scotland about an opportunity within the profession. After maintaining contact with the firm for two years, he secured a Trainee Building Surveyor role in June 2024. He has since completed his degree with First Class Honours and progressed into his current Graduate Building Surveyor role.

“David’s commitment extends beyond his day-to-day role. His final-year dissertation explored the age and gender imbalance within surveying, including research with industry professionals and secondary school pupils,” explains Allied Surveyors Scotland’s director of operations, Kevin Keane.

“He is now putting his findings into action by taking part in a mentoring initiative at his former school, helping young people understand the career opportunities available within the built environment.”

David has also recently been selected to join the Allied Surveyors Scotland Associate Board, where he is keen to support initiatives around colleague engagement, professional development and attracting future talent into the profession.

At just 20, David has already combined six years of practical construction experience with a First Class Honours degree and a growing professional career, while actively contributing to the future of surveying.

The final selection will take place at the CIOB Scotland Awards lunch at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Glasgow, on Friday 9 October 2026.
